Adventure Teambuilding 2024 in Greece - kayaking, rafting, hiking and beautiful panoramic views

This year's summer team-building event took place in Greece, where we spent four days filled with water adventures, spiritual inspiration, energy from nature, and thrilling experiences. We got a taste of the rich cultural and natural heritage of the Meteora region, and we will share all that we experienced in the following lines.

Day 1: Kalimera, Greece!

Early on Thursday morning, June 20, we set off for Greece, brimming with enthusiasm and anticipation for the upcoming adventures. The journey went smoothly, and after a few hours, we crossed the border. Along the way, we stopped for lunch at a cozy tavern, where we enjoyed traditional Greek cuisine.

Rafting in Grevena on the Aliakmonas River

Our first destination was the rafting base in Grevena, where our first adventure began. At the base, we were equipped with the necessary gear and then boarded a retro bus that took us to the rafting starting point. After a brief safety briefing and being divided into several rafting boats, we descended the calm waters of the Aliakmonas River. The instructors told us more about the river and that the Slavs call it "Bistritsa" (swift river), while in ancient Greece it was known as "Aliakmon," which has evolved into Aliakmonas in modern times. It is the longest entirely Greek river, with a length of 297 kilometers. Since the river is full and faster in the spring, and in the summer, it is technical and warmer, our scenario had no significant rapids, strong currents, or adrenaline.

We enjoyed picturesque rock formations, flora, and fauna. At several suitable spots, we stopped for body rafting in the river current, swimming, and rock jumping for the more adventurous. Meanwhile, others had the opportunity to relax on the rocky beach and enjoy the beauty of nature.

In the middle of the course, the organizers treated us to tea and cookies to recharge, and we continued.

We had fun with water guns, and no one stayed dry. Some even did an Eskimo roll for an extra dose of adrenaline. After making sure that everyone was sufficiently tired and wet, we disembarked on the shore, where our familiar retro bus awaited to take us back to the base, where we were treated to a refreshing watermelon.

Kalispera, Kastraki!

After the river adventures, we headed to Kastraki, where we stayed at Hotel Meteoritis. The hotel impressed us with its beautiful view and clean air, ideal for relaxation after the long day. We had dinner at the hotel's restaurant, enjoying traditional dishes and discussing the day's experiences.

Day 2: Between Heaven and Earth - ΜΕΤΈΩΡΑ

We started the day with a delicious breakfast at the hotel to fuel our energy. We met with our guide and set out on a hike in the Meteora area. Meteora is a landmark included оn the UNESCO World Heritage list; some even call it the eighth wonder of the world due to its impressive monasteries perched atop giant rock formations. After leaving the hotel, we undertook a moderately difficult hike, passing through forest paths and reaching fantastic panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and villages. We learned a great deal about the history and culture of the monasteries and the region.

We definitely understood why the name Meteora means "suspended in the air," as do the monasteries themselves.

It was interesting to learn that the rocks of Meteora formed about 60 million years ago. The waters of a lake rose significantly, resulting in the formation of the Tempé Gorge, and the waters retreated to the Aegean Sea. Thus, due to erosion and sand, unique rocks were formed, which attracted monks because they were secluded and inaccessible.

Our hike ended with a visit to one of the monasteries - the Monastery of Varlaam. It was built in just 20 days. At the monastery, we explored examples of Christian architecture and culture and enjoyed a stunning view from the huge terrace overlooking the entire area.

Our tour concluded and, spiritually uplifted, we descended a steep path back to the village, where we had lunch with traditional Greek dishes and drinks at a local tavern. The afternoon was free for rest and fun. Some of us played cards and backgammon, others enjoyed a pool at a nearby hotel, while others chose to relax.

We had dinner at an authentic tavern and watched the sunset over Meteora. We enjoyed live music and danced the syrtaki. The delicious food and pleasant atmosphere made for a wonderful end to the day. After dinner, we returned to the hotel for a well-deserved rest.

Day 3: Canoeing-Kayaking on the Pineios River and Beach in Makrigialos

On Saturday, after breakfast, part of the team departed for the village of Paleopirgos to the Pineios River for canoeing-kayaking. The others headed to T.Ammos Beach in Makrigialos for relaxation and fun.

#PassThePaddleThere

At the meeting point, we were greeted by the organizers, who instructed and equipped us. Divided into pairs in kayaks, we quickly mastered the paddling technique and enjoyed the floating experience.

Communication within the group was key, and moving together at a moderate pace was important, which we achieved without problems. It was clear which colleagues had experience with watercraft and paddles; some pairs stood out for paddling in excellent synchrony. The river took us to the sea, but due to the waves, it was dangerous and the plan was altered.

On the beach, we had a picnic and an archery game organized. We had an interesting experience involving strength, physical exertion, and spirit. We named it "Will Games." We had to transport the kayaks from the river to the beach pavilion where the picnic was held.

The Stenik guys showed Apollonian strength and a strong spirit by excelling at the task and transporting all the canoes along the beach. As a reward, we enjoyed fresh food and drinks and continued with the activities. We definitely proved that despite the stereotypes about IT professions, we are in good physical shape and can handle such situations excellently.

In archery, several finalists emerged. Reaching the semifinals were Stefan, Stoyan, and Nikolay, who had precise aim and shot arrows with finesse. Other colleagues showed good physical preparation and engaged in beach sports with weightlifting and lunges.

At the end, the organizers arranged transportation back to the starting point, where our cars awaited. The transport experience was unforgettable as it turned out to be quite extreme. The road was uneven, and the driver treated us to a fast drift and off-road experience, which we will definitely remember for a long time.

After canoeing-kayaking, we headed to Makrigialos. We joined our colleagues on the beach to enjoy a cocktail, play cards, and soak up the sun. We checked into the hotel in the town, and after a short rest, it was time for dinner.

Στην υγειά σας!

We had dinner at Akrogiali Tavern, where we tried a three-kilogram, freshly caught fish with a harpoon, along with various seafood specialties that perfectly complemented our pleasant conversations, the sound of the waves, and the full moon. Of course, there were many toasts, huge doses of good mood, and lots of fun. After dinner, we took a walk along the seaside promenade and enjoyed the sea breeze.

Αντίο, Greece!

All good things come to an end. Our Greek teambuilding event concluded, but the memories and emotions will stay with us for a long time. Recharged with new strength and energy, we are ready for the upcoming challenges and more successful projects. The trip to Greece not only gave us a chance to break away from everyday life and try something new and different but also to strengthen our team spirit and create new, unforgettable memories together.
